MAMMA MIA! Looking Great Postpartum
This post is dedicated to the talented Jamie Geller, of the “Quick & Kosher” cookbooks and Joy of Kosher magazine, who recently had a baby girl. And, of course, to my sister-in-law Mimi who just had a baby boy (and always looks fabulous, by the way…)
Many women wish that the weeks or months following childbirth can be spent indoors, in a semi-hibernation state with their newborn. With a sweet new baby, severe sleep deprivation, and no clothes that fit right, who would want to leave their house?
But cozying up in a cocoon until you’re ready to face the world is unfortunately not a viable option for most women. If you feel like all your clothes make you look fat or pregnant (or both!) keep this basic tip in mind for postpartum dressing:
Instead of dressing to conceal, try wearing clothes that will give subtle definition to your shape while camouflaging areas you want to hide. Instead of wearing empire waists or your old maternity clothes (which will just make you look pregnant!), try a belted cardigan or sweater. The belt will softly define your newly returning waist, while the loose drape of the sweater will distract from any imperfections.
The following outfits all hide a postpartum belly and look ultra fabulous to boot!
Outfit 1 - This soft sweater is so feminine and flattering as well. The monochromatic blush color palette is very on-trend and will bring light onto your face (a valuable thing when you’re lacking sleep!)
Outfit 2 - This casual vest lends a semi-tailored structure to the outfit. The belt should be placed at the narrowest point of the waist for a slimming effect. I love the stripes with this - it brings vibrancy to an outfit that would otherwise be plain. (I’m a big fan of wearing stripes as you would a neutral top since it’s so versatile and visually interesting. See how to wear them in my post “The Ultimate Multitasker:1 Striped Shirt = 4 Fab Looks”)
Outfit 3 - Wearing a bit of luxury is always uplifting. This silk button-down shirt can be paired with a plush gray vest with a bow belt for an absolute stunner of an ensemble (and so flattering too!). Donning high heels in a vibrant color and a spritz of a new perfume can work wonders on your mood as well. This outfit is perfect for a bris.
