Buttoned Up Shirts, Nerdy Glasses and Other Geeky Stuff

A curious trend has been making its way around stylish circles. Clothes that were once the exclusive territory of nerds is now fair game for the most fashionable. Vests, shoes with socks, shrunken jackets, pants that are a few inches too short, and those really clunky black glasses make up what is now called Geek Chic.

So what exactly is the allure of looking like an androgynous computer geek with ill-fitting garb?

I think that adopting traditional nerdy garb for fashion’s sake is very subversive and fashionably ironic.

There is one particular aspect of Geek Chic that interests me: the all-the-way to the neck buttoned-up shirt.

Growing up, buttoning your shirt up all the way was a total no-no. It was the epitome of nebbishness. (Is that a word? Maybe it’s nebbiness? Hmm… I’m thinking now that even using the word “neb” kinda makes me one.)

In any case, buttoning your shirt up all the way seems like a liberating thing to do. It’s unique twist, lends a polished air to the whole outfit and is certainly very modest.

This is my version of nebby-cool:

Geek Chic
Each piece has its own geeky heritage, but is modern in its detail. For example, the Mr. Rogers sweater is very grandfatherly, but in a modern color. The brogues, too, strike a balance between old and new because of the leopard print on it.
The question begs to be asked:
Are you into this look? Would you ever completely button your shirt all the way to the collar? Or is geek chic a phase you’re happy to wait out?
