Ask Bellabusta: “What Fashion Items Should I Splurge On?”
I started a new fashion advice column in The Jewish Press. Here’s the first one!
Q. What key fashion items are worth splurging on that make a big difference and can transform your whole look from looking nice to looking fabulous? -Miriam W.
A. Deciding what clothes or accessories to spend more on than you normally do is mostly an individual matter. It depends on your budget as well as personal taste.
Still, there are some categories in which buying quality items is well worth the extra cost. Firstly, anything tailored looks a lot more polished when it fits well. For example, a well-cut blazer, motorcycle jacket or crisp white shirt can make any outfit look posh and put together.
Another thing worth spending more money on: handbags. I don’t mean the type that is emblazoned with designer logos, though. Good quality, leather purses in classic styles will last for a long time, keep their shape well and will instantly raise your look up a notch. Often these handbags can be expensive; I love Marshall’s and Century 21 for their steeply discounted designer ones.
As for fashion items not worth spending on: jewelry. With the current costume jewelry craze, cheap yet trendy baubles are abundant. Inexpensive jewelry may not last as long as the real thing, but with the trends constantly changing it’s better not to invest in an overly pricey piece.
