Go Shell-less
Layering is the perfect way to make an outfit modest. Any tznius issue can be easily fixed by adding a shell, cardigan or even an extra skirt. But layers + summer = a sweltering combo. So I challenged myself to come up with modest and trendy outfits with no shells required. I built nine outfits along three shell-less themes. Every piece was chosen with a mind to budget, varying style preferences as well as body types - both regular and plus-size items are featured. There is something for everyone! Click on the icons underneath each collage and you’ll be directed to the retailer’s website where you can purchase that item.

Simplici-tee by bellabusta featuring yellow scarves

Theme #1 “simplici-tee”
Basic tees can be accessorized to create a lightweight, stylish outfit.
1. The peplum on this incredible Alice + Olivia t-shirt has so much spunk, it can stand on its own. Paired with a denim skirt and trendy yellow accessories, this is fun, fun, fun!
2. A problem that t-shirts can have is the neck being too open. One option is to have it altered by a seamstress. But you can also hide it with a hipster neck scarf! Those scarves are very en vogue now and it will allow you to leave the extra shell behind.
3. This cranberry t-shirt (Hanes!) can be worn casually or more dressed up. Here it is paired with layers of necklaces and formal accessories; perfect for a night out.

Theme #2 “all buttoned up”
Button-front collared shirts have so much versatility. If you want to forgo the extra shell underneath, try buttoning up the shirt until the top, or as close to the top as you dare. The menswear trend for women makes it fashionable to wear your shirt all buttoned up, but it’s definitely a daring move. Another way to wear the shirt more closed is to place a statement necklace on top of your shirt, under the collar. It looks really sophisticated and distracts from the fact that there is not much skin showing.
4. I love this wearable cowgirl look! Okay, so the leather boots kind of take away from the fact that these are supposed to be summer outfits, but I couldn’t resist!
5. These colors are great - sky blue, white and silver are so peaceful and light when combined.
6. The key to this outfit are the red accessories - the pop of color brings everything together.

Theme #3 “take a bow”
Bow-front blouses can be styled in a youthful and feminine way. The key is to balance the voluminous top with a slim skirt or a waist-cinching belt.
7. Watercolor prints are currently in the style spotlight. I love this chic look for a special occasion. Because there is so much fabric in this silhouette, keep the rest of the outfit simple with one bold accessory, like this black cocktail ring.
8. The green and red in this look are a nice example of the color-blocking trend. Aren’t these heeled loafers gorgeous?
9. This monochromatic blush outfit is airy and soft. The gold bangles give it some edge.
What do you think about these shell-less looks? Will you be attempting a one-layer outfit this summer?
