Fall Fashion: Modestly Modified

(This article originally appeared in the Jewish Press column “Beauty and the Bellabusta.”)

I am always amazed at the frum women around me. So many women gracefully balance being beautifully in fashion with being balebustes as well – in other words, they’re Bellabustas! Even the most current fashions can be modestly modified. Let’s have a glimpse at four off-the-runway fall trends that can easily be adapted for any Bellabusta.

Fall Trend #1 = Brightly Colored Pants → Brightly Colored Skirts

This modest fashion revision is a no-brainer. Saturated neons were all over the fall runways in the form of pants, but skirts can do the job just as well. Pair a brightly colored solid skirt with a crisp white tailored top, neutral cardigan or with a shirt in a contrasting color (e.g. yellow skirt + blue shirt).

Fall Trend #2 = Menswear Dressing → Menswear Dressing with a Femme Twist

Tuxedos, sharp suits and heavy tweeds are all on trend for fall. Although we won’t be seeing too many frum women in smoking jackets, inspiration can be gleaned from the menswear trend. Try one menswear basic and temper with feminine pieces. “Man up” for fall with a tailored blazer and a voluminous skirt, a skirted wool suit with a floral scarf, or a vest with a maxi skirt.

Fall Trend #3 = Cat Eyeliner → “Kitten” Eyeliner

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the “cat eye” makeup look in its full glory (read: eyeliner winged up way past the eyelids). For a toned down version of this feline-friendly trend, try winging your eye shadow instead by applying a smoky shade past the end of your eyes in an upward motion.

Fall Trend #4 = Mid-Calf Skirts → Mid-Calf Skirts

Trend #4 is a cheat; this one needs no adjustment! Don’t you love when modest clothing options are actually in style? Mid-calf skirts are coming back after a long hibernation period.  Flared midi skirts are retro-chic when they are worn high-waisted and belted with a tucked-in blouse. Straight midi skirts are fabulous with loose-fitting tops and tailored pieces. Whatever the cut, keep this mid-calf style flattering and wear with a high heel or wedge.
